Your credit may be in shambles and you are at a complete loss as to what to do to fix it – Fast!  It is easy to learn how to repair credit without really putting a lot of effort into it.  The first thing to remember is:  You don’t need a credit repair company to do it for you.  You are perfectly capable of taking matters into your own hands and figuring out a way to solve your credit problems quite easily.  There are so-called professionals out there who make all kinds of promises to you about erasing bad credit and they make it sound like it is something you need help doing.  But, you absolutely can do it yourself and you will save lots of money and time in the process.

The very first thing you will want to do is to get a copy of your credit report.  By reviewing it, you will be able to see any errors or discrepancies.  These reports can be requested from one of the three credit reporting bureaus available in the United States.  They are either free or sometimes the credit bureau will charge a minimal fee shipping and handling.  When you receive your reports, look to see if there is anything that can be repaired such as incorrect information (such as accounts that are not yours and incorrectly reported late payments),  accounts that are late or sent for collection, and maxed out accounts that are over the available credit limit.  If you find errors on your report, you have the right to dispute them.  Follow the instructions included with your credit report to report any erroneous information.  You can also compose your own letter regarding your concerns and send it directly to the credit reporting agency.

In order to improve your credit score, take a close look at any accounts that are past due or maxed out.  These are the items that you need to take care of immediately in order to begin restoring your credit rating.  It looks much better on your credit report if all your past due accounts are current or that you are in the process of paying them.  Find all credit card accounts that are maxed out and bring them below the credit limit.  Then try hard to keep getting the unpaid balance lower and lower until it’s completely paid off.  It is quite simple to learn how to repair credit if you have a strong desire to get back on track again and become a qualified borrower.

You may have bad credit and are looking for a way to get it fixed.  It is very tempting to use a credit repair company to solve your financial woes but you absolutely need to be very careful if this is the path you choose.  You don’t need one of these companies to rebuild your credit rating and they often are only in the business to make large amounts of money off of you, the desperate consumer.  It is easy to take care of the problem yourself without taking a chance on fraud or illegal activities and without paying a huge fee.

Credit repair services claim that they can magically erase your bad credit.  This is not true because the only way for this to happen is to determine that the credit information is inaccurate.  And, you can easily get incorrect information erased from you record on your own by simply sending a dispute letter to the credit reporting agency.  They are obliged to investigate your claim and respond within 30 days to your letter.  You do not need a credit repair service to do this for you and it will only cost you a little bit of your time and a postage stamp.  These companies claim that they can even get rid of accurate information on your credit report.  This is untrue.  Legitimate credit information cannot legally be removed from your report.

In order to obtain good credit and keep it without using a credit repair company, you should request a credit report from one of the following:  Equifax, Experian or Trans Union.  Be prepared to pay a small fee but it is free if you have been denied credit for any reason during the past 60 days.  Another way to get a free report is to be unemployed in any 12 month period and your plans are to apply for a job in the next 60 days.  You can also get a free report if you are on welfare or you believe your report contains inaccurate or fraudulent information.  Your request for a report must be in writing and contain your name, birth date, social security number and where you have lived during the past 5 years.

Are you looking for a way to fix your bad credit?  Are you having trouble getting a loan for a new house or a new car?  Are you being denied a credit card because there is something on your credit report that is causing your credit score to be unacceptable?  If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” then you may be interested to learn about a credit repair service.  If you have ever used credit, then a credit bureau somewhere has your borrowing and payment information on record and is a powerful source that is relied upon to give accurate credit scores. Credit bureaus are also used by landlords, insurance companies and even employers to check your credit worthiness.

If there is something on your credit report that is making it impossible for you to get any type of loan or if you are unable to qualify for housing or insurance coverage, then you need to verify that the information on your credit report is accurate.  Basically, the report from a credit bureau shows how many credit cards you have and whether you have made every payment on time.  When you apply for additional credit, a credit score is assigned to you based on your credit history and it determines the amount of your monthly payment.  The payment can be reasonable if your score is high; it can be astronomical if your credit score is low.  That is why it is so important to fix your credit score if it is inaccurate.

The unfortunate condition that is occurring today is that there are many credit repair companies that advertise quick fixes to your credit problems.  They advertise that they can repair your credit by just a few quick “tweaks” on how your credit history is scored.  These companies are generally only interested in charging you a high fee for their services and are apt to encourage you to lie and commit fraud to fix your credit.  These repair services are getting lots of business in today’s hard economic times because most people have outdated and inaccurate information on their credit reports.  It is up to you, and you alone, to fix anything wrong.  Credit bureaus simply report the information given to them by creditors and assign a credit score based on that information.  They are not responsible for verifying that the information is correct unless you dispute it.  It’s better for you to find any errors on your own and avoid using a credit repair service.   Don’t take a chance by being fraudulent or untruthful in your quest to fix your credit

There are some tools that you can use to get a start on fixing your bad credit.  The web has numerous sites that have credit repair software that you can use to help yourself start on the road to credit recovery.   These software tools will help you discover inaccurate credit information that might be showing up on your credit reports and to correct any errors so that your credit score improves.  The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the protection you need to keep your credit score accurate.  In addition to assisting you with the complex process of how credit is scored, these software products will give you sample credit dispute letters and tips on how to negotiate with your creditors.  Many software programs will allow you to get your own personal credit report from the software itself.

You may shutter when you think about what is appearing on your credit report.  This report is a reporting mechanism that keeps track of your past borrowing and repaying habits.  It lists any late payments that you have made and it also records bankruptcies you have filed.  It takes all of this information and comes up with a credit score that companies use to determine if they will loan you money.  Credit bureaus are the clearing houses that credit card companies, banks and stores use to find out your credit score.  If your credit score is high enough, you probably will be considered “worthy” of getting the loan and your creditors will be confident that you will eventually repay your debt.

Sometimes the information contained in your report is not correct and you are having a very difficult time obtaining any kind of loan.  If this is your situation, then you need to find a way to fix your credit report so that the wrong information is removed from your credit file.  If you find an error on your report, your job is to send a credit dispute letter to the credit bureau.  It then has 30 days to verify that the information it has is correct.  Most credit bureau disputes will be resolved to your satisfaction and your credit score will improve.  Using credit repair software will help you get the loan you want because of its availability online.  It is an easy tool to help you on your journey to a better credit report!

As an American consumer, you probably have lots of debt and may even have gotten behind on some of your payments.  If so, your credit score is probably not so good and you’re wondering if some of the credit repair services you have read about are legitimate.  You’re not alone and there are some important things you need to know before even considering using one of these services.   Many of these companies claim that they can remove bankruptcies and liens from your credit history forever and that they have means to erase all of your bad credit reports on file.  Be very, very cautious and don’t fall for one of these schemes.  There is no way that your bad credit will go away on its own other than you applying a conscious effort to improve it.

Most credit repair companies charge a fee for “cleaning up” your credit history and make idle promises to get you approved for a home mortgage, car loan and other purchases that you have been unable to make.  These companies take your money for a job that they legally cannot do.  They absolutely cannot improve your credit rating in the ways that they advertise.  They want their fees “up front”, even before they have performed any services for you.  They don’t help you at all in finding ways to help yourself and your rights as their customer is not fully explained.  They encourage you not to contact any of the three major credit reporting companies in the United States.  Some of these companies even go so far as to recommend that you quit using your social security card and apply for an Employer Identification Number in an effort to come up with a new credit identity.  Don’t fall for any of these gimmicks and idle promises because the chances are that these credit “services” are there for one thing only.  They want to get your money and not deliver on their promised services.

Be extremely careful if you choose to use a credit repair service to solve your continuing credit problems.  They may encourage you to do things illegally and even commit fraud.  If you follow their advice, you could very well end up in deep legal trouble.  Do not give untrue information on a loan or credit application, do not misrepresent your social security number and absolutely do not try to get an Employer Identification Number from the IRS unless you have a legitimate right to do so. All of these things are federal crimes.
